Emmy noms: Snubs that made you mad

Awards season is gearing up again (already!), and where there are nods, there are sure to be snubs. In honor of the Emmy nominations announced Thursday -- and the fan outrage over Tatiana Maslany being overlooked for her masterful work in "Orphan Black" -- we take a look at some of the shows that never received outstanding series honors from the Academy. • The 2014 Emmy nominations were announced, and not everyone is celebrating

(CNN) -- Another year of Emmy Award nominations, another year of "They forgot who?!"

Though the Emmys are commonly known as the arbiter of excellence in television, with so many good shows on the air right now, they inevitably also become the leader of the snubs. What TV favorites had fans shouting at their screens after being left in the dark? Take a look:

Clone Club for the win.

It seemed like a no-brainer. Last year's omission of Tatiana Maslany, the uber-talented lead actress from BBC America's sci-fi hit "Orphan Black," left fans in fits of rage. The self-proclaimed Clone Club -- named after the actress' multiple clone characters -- did everything short of picketing the red carpet. Now, that she has been left out a second time, all bets are off.

"NO TATIANA. GET YOUR PITCHFORKS OUT NOW," one enraged fan tweeted.

"At least I have today off work to mourn Tatiana Maslany's Emmys snub in the privacy of my own home," another clone-clubber tweeted.

Fans were so affected by the snub that #EmmyForMaslany was a trending topic on Twitter for much of Thursday morning.

For those who watch the show, this outrage shouldn't be too much of a surprise. The actress impressively portrays more than six characters, and sometimes, all of those characters appear in the same scene. Sure, stand-ins and special effects offer a bit of assistance, but Maslany inhabits her characters so fully, it's easy to forget there aren't different actresses on screen. From reckless Sarah Manning to neurotic soccer mom Alison Hendrix, all the way to free-spirited scientist Cosima Niehaus, Maslany seamlessly jumps from one to the next. Who could forget that incredible dance scene in the Season 2 finale featuring four clones?

"How does the academy snub Tatiana Maslany for lead actress in a drama? She plays 6 characters!" fellow actress Wendi McLendon-Covey tweeted. Fans shouldn't get too upset, though; Maslany is a back-to-back Critic's Choice Award winner for her portrayal of the duplicates. And hey, there's always season 3 (thank you, BBC America, for the much-needed renewal)!

'The Walking Dead': Alive in the ratings, still dead to the Emmys.

In just four seasons, AMC's "The Walking Dead" has gone from "that gory graphic novel show" to the highest-rated cable program in history. But for some reason, this zombie apocalyptic drama is not a hit with the Emmys. It scored no nods in any of the major categories (though, to be fair, it did get one for editing and another for special effects).

"Oh look, Walking Dead got snubbed at the Emmys again..." one disappointed fan lamented.

"Yet again The Walking Dead gets snubbed at the Emmys despite having some of the best writing and acting I've seen on tv. Lame," another ranted.

And not for nothing, but how could they leave off the magnificent Melissa McBride in the supporting actress category? Starting as a scared and battered wife and mother, McBride has taken the character to one of the toughest women in television.

Lena Dunham steals Mindy Kaling's thunder.

Lena and Mindy: Two incredible actresses and comedians who have created, written and starred in their own shows, but one has just been snubbed by the Emmys.

While writer/actress/director Lena Dunham is constantly recognized for her gritty and dark HBO comedy "Girls," Mindy Kaling's much brighter Fox comedy about a single doctor struggling to find love is all but forgotten. Even more awkward? Along with Carson Daly, Kaling was announcing the nominations Thursday morning!

"Endless props to Mindy Kaling, who had to keep reading the TelePrompTer even after her snub," Vulture wrote on Twitter.

"Mindy Kaling robbed again by the Emmys. Can we just start our own campaign to award her queen of everything?" tweeted one Kaling supporter.

So what gives, Emmys? "The Mindy Project" is not only funny, Kaling is irresistibly adorable as the quirky lead. You also can't forget actor Chris Messina, who has helped mold the cliched love interest into the loveable Danny, now everyone's work crush.

Shamelessly snubbing 'Shameless.'

Yes, excellent lead actor William H. Macy did get a nomination, but the show received no other nods, a serious oversight. In its fourth season, the dark Showtime comedy was at its absolute best. Although the quality of many shows drops as the series progresses, "Shameless" has only gotten better.

The Gallaghers are like family at this point, albeit the most dysfunctional one around. And where do we begin with the absence of lead actress Emmy Rossum for her portrayal of the family matriarch who manages to sometimes be a bigger wreck than her much-younger siblings? How could voters forget her when she has the same name as the awards show?

"Ew at that Emmy Rossum snub Emmys. Ew. Ugh. I hate you so much right now," a disgruntled fan tweeted.

'Americans' hustle.

While FX's "Fargo" received plenty of love at this year's nominations, its sophomore drama, "The Americans," was not as lucky. This espionage thriller not only keeps fans constantly guessing at what is coming next, it manages to make us fall in love with Soviet spies who are out to get America.

It is possible that Showtime's perennial favorite "Homeland" stole all the attention from "The Americans," but anyone who has seen both knows they are vastly different. And don't get fans started on the lack of a Keri Russell nomination for lead actress. Her performance is enough to make some Americans want to turn traitor just to partner up with her.

"The Emmys are anti-Americans," New York Daily News columnist Bill Hammond cleverly tweeted.

Amy Poehler gets a nom, but her shows find no love.

Yes, fans can rejoice; Amy Poehler nabbed a nomination for lead actress for her portrayal of politician Leslie Knope on NBC's "Parks and Recreation." Now, the trick will be for her to win, which hasn't happened with her previous nods.

Unfortunately, her two shows were missing from the comedy series category: "Parks" is the most obvious miss, with a crackling cast that matches the chemistry of "The Office" mixed with the political satire of HBO's "Veep" -- both of which have been Emmy favorites.

But the lesser-known snub would be Comedy Central's "Broad City," of which Poehler is executive producer. "Broad City" follows two women in their 20s living in New York, and the rest is just too crazy to even explain. It's only one season in, and the hilarity that ensues between actresses Ilana Glazer and Abbi Jacobson (who also created the show) is both bitingly smart and LOL-funny.

"It's a joke Broad City didn't get nominated for an Emmy. Funniest show on TV," a fan tweeted after the announcement.

You can root for your favorites that were actually nominated (or shout at the screen in protest for those who were not) when the 2014 Emmy Awards air live on NBC at 8 p.m. ET August 25. They're hosted by "Late Night's" Seth Meyers.

Fire kills 3 children, 4 adults

  • Fire burns apartments above liquor store

  • Investigators looking into reports that fireworks were heard at building, fire marshal says

  • Building didn't have sprinkler system, and wasn't required to have one, fire chief says

(CNN) -- Seven people -- including three children -- were killed and at least 10 other people were sent to a hospital as a result of an apartment fire Thursday morning in Lowell, Massachusetts, officials said.

The fire, reported just before 4 a.m., burned through some apartments above a liquor store, state Fire Marshal Stephen Coan told reporters.

Those who died were found in two of the four apartment units on the third floor, Coan said.

Investigators are looking into reports that people heard sounds of fireworks coming from the building around the time the fire started, but no determination about the fire's cause has been made, Coan said.

Authorities also are investigating reports that no alarm sounded in the building, even though the structure had a fire alarm system, Coan said.

"I expect this to be a long and thorough process," Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan said of the investigation.

The building did not have a sprinkler system, but a structure that size would not require one, Pitta said.

Some people jumped from windows, and firefighters rescued others with a ladder, Lowell Fire Chief Edward Pitta said. The building generally had about 50 occupants, but investigators didn't know how many people were there when the fire began, he said.

Parts of the interior collapsed, and that will slow the investigation, Coan said.

Ten victims were being evaluated at Lowell General Hospital, hospital spokeswoman Angela Strunk said. Their ages and conditions weren't immediately available.

Lowell is about 35 miles northwest of downtown Boston.

  • She says a piece of ceiling fell around 3 a.m., exposing a chemical in a work area

  • Hazardous materials crews are on the scene

  • Architect of the Capitol: There was a "potential release" during "asbestos abatement work"

Washington (CNN) -- The House of Representatives side of the U.S. Capitol is closed Thursday because of a construction-related incident, officials said.

Police spokeswoman Kimberly Schneider said the incident is confined and not suspicious. A piece of ceiling fell down around 3 a.m., exposing a chemical substance in a work area.

Schneider did not know if the ceiling fell on a container, or whether the substance is liquid. Hazardous materials crews were on the scene.

Laura Condeluci, spokeswoman for the Architect of the Capitol, said there was a "potential release" during "asbestos abatement work" on the House of Representatives side.

"Samples have been collected to determine whether there was potential exposure," Condeluci said.

  • The Italian is targeting his first win since the European PGA Championship triumph in 2013

(CNN) -- In the world of golf, the next generation of stars just keeps on getting younger.

Ever since Judy Rankin blazed a trail by entering the 1959 U.S. Women's Open at the age of 14, the sport has been a playground for many a young pretender.

Lucy Li was the latest child prodigy to rewrite the record books in May when she became the youngest player to ever qualify for the U.S. Women's Open, aged just 11, although she failed to make the cut at last month's event.

The men's game is in similar rude health.

Guan Tianlang became the youngest player to make the cut in a major championship following his appearance as a 14-year-old at the 2013 Masters, while Jordan Spieth nearly became the youngest player to win that tournament in April at the age of 20.

"We are encountering them more often. They are exceptionally mature guys for their age," former teen prodigy Matteo Manassero told CNN of the young players coming through the ranks.

"They are extremely powerful guys that can perform extremely well. They have the confidence and the freedom of being young to perform against their idols."

Manassero, now a seasoned tour pro at the age of just 21, speaks from experience.

The Italian was the most successful teenager in European Tour history and remains the youngest player to win one of its events.

At the age of 17 years and 188 days -- before he had even learned how to drive a car -- he triumphed at the 2010 Castello Masters, and has since backed that up with three more European Tour wins, including the flagship BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in 2013.

Before Tianlang, Manassero was the youngest player to make the cut at the Masters, aged 16 in 2010 -- his 36th-place finish at Augusta ranked as the best performance by a European amateur for 73 years.

"I can certainly speak for Tianglang and he was extremely mature," Manassero said.

Manassero's hopes for the future

"You can just see the way he was at Augusta. Aged 14 and he knew what he wanted to do, he knew where he wanted to hit it, he knew how far ... at 14 that's certainly exceptional."

11-year-old golfer makes history

Lexi Thompson, Ye Wocheng, Andy Zhang, Ryo Ishikawa and Lydia Ko are just a few of golf's child prodigies.

Each of the quintet made their own piece of history while still on the amateur circuit -- something Manassero views as essential in the process of fast-tracking youngsters to global golfing fame.

"I think amateur golf is one important key aspect of this and I am sure that young guys 15 years ago, they were totally able even at 17 to play with the pros, but they just probably didn't really know that they could," he says.

After becoming the youngest winner of the British Amateur Championship in 2009, Manassero went on to place 13th at that year's British Open Championship, earning himself the Silver Medal for the leading non-pro in the process.

"Amateur golf, from my point of view, made me believe that I could compete at any level because it was really, really competitive," he says. "You know, we were winning tournaments and seeing golf courses in which they also played European tournaments.

"The standard is really, really high, it is very competitive. I was playing all over Europe, I was playing in America too when I was 15, 16 as an amateur, so it was really almost like being a professional. The only difference was school."

Manassero turned professional in May 2010 -- two weeks after his 17th birthday -- to become the second youngest member in European Tour history after Seve Ballesteros.

Jordan Spieth recreates amazing bunker shot

He had to wait just five months before his first win on the tour, and he credits the likes of Rory McIlroy, who also made a successful transition upon turning professional, with helping him to that maiden triumph in Spain.

Annika Sorenstam in full swing

"You get a lot of confidence from playing with great players, with tough opponents. Once I turned pro and I started doing well, I saw Rory a little before me, a few years before me," he says.

Rory McIlroy & Caroline Wozniacki split

"It inspires you and gives you confidence and makes you think that you can do it too. Professional golf is really tough, but once you're in it you can do it even if you are young."

In golfing terms, Manassero is still a baby with a long career lying ahead of him.

And despite his recent frustrations, including a 118th-place finish in his PGA Championship title defense -- won by McIlroy in May -- his enthusiasm for the sport remains the same as when he was teeing up at Augusta for the first time with the eyes of the world upon him.

"It's not been a fantastic period lately but I am still enjoying it, the days that I go out and shoot a big score, I am having a lot of fun," Manassero says.

"In general, when I am at a tournament that is the place I want to be. I wouldn't want to be anywhere else. Until I'm going to feel different, it's going to be fine, it's going to be great."

Budget airlines‘not imposing new security measures’

There is a lot of confusion with the new security measures in British airports. This is especially due to the fact that budget airlines, EasyJet and Ryanair are not imposing them.

UK flyers have been warned that they need to charge their electrical devices before they arrive at the airport, such as ipads, to show that they are working. If they cannot switch on the device, they will have to leave it behind them.

The new anti terror laws come after the USA claimed it received a creditable terror threat through its intelligence network. The UK government won’t reveal which routes are being targeted, however, Australian officials have confirmed that the routes from Europe, North Africa and the Middle East are being watched closely.

However, Ryanair and EasyJet have not been imposing the checks as they claim that they ‘don’t apply’ to them, hence, fuelling further confusion.

A spokesman for EasyJet stated that, 'The safety and security of its passengers and crew is EasyJet's highest priority. The airline fully adheres to all regulations which apply to its flights.

'EasyJet is aware that the Department of Transport may extend some of the new security measures but at this stage no new measures have been applied to passengers flying on EasyJet flights. If that changes we will advise our passengers accordingly,' they concluded.

The Department for Transport declined to comment on the confusion, but said there were security reasons why they were not confirming which flights were affected by the new policy.

Scottish teen in serious condition from Majorca fall

A 19-year-old Scottish man is in a serious condition after falling from a third floor balcony in Magaluf. He fell onto the concert floor near the pool below. He is in intensive care in Son Espases Hospital with arm and head injuries. His condition is described as serious, but not life threatening.

The incident occurred around 6am on Wednesday morning in his hotel, just across from the beach and only 200 metres away from the Punta Ballena party strip where the shocking sex act video involving a British tourist was recorded.

He had flown to Majorca only a few hours before and was planning to look for a summer job.

"He's a great guy. He is a serious person who had come to work here for the season," his emotional British friend told Diario de Mallorca.

"I heard him and three other friends when they were on the balcony. After that I don't know what happened," he said.

Police believe that the tourist either lost balance while trying to jump to another balcony or he was attempting the highly dangerous social trend of ‘balconing,’ where holidaymakers attempt to jump into hotel pools from their balconies.

Three British tourists were killed in balcony falls in April and May 2012 in a horrible string of tragedies.

The British Consul in the Balearics have stated in the past that, “We've already seen some tragic cases which have had devastating consequences for the individuals and families concerned.

"Some people have fallen whilst climbing to a friend's apartment, others have simply lost their footing after a few too many drinks and a few have deliberately jumped off aiming for the pool below.

"It should go without saying these practices are extremely dangerous and can cost them their life or leave them permanently disabled."
