5 people you should 'unfriend'

  • Monday is National Unfriend Day

  • The fake holiday was invented in 2010 by talk-show host Jimmy Kimmel

  • Here are 5 types of social media "friends" you may want to lose

(CNN) -- We all have them: Old classmates, distant relatives or obnoxious co-workers, filling our social feeds with posts about people we don't know or barely remember.

Jimmy Kimmel would like us to let them go.

It's that time of year again -- National Unfriend Day, a holiday of sorts invented by the talk-show host to encourage people to prune the deadwood from their Facebook friend lists. In a new video, Kimmel reminds people about Monday's "holiday" while issuing a warning to annoying Facebookers.

"You keep suggesting we 'like' something," he says. "Stop it, because we barely like you."

The average adult Facebook user has 338 friends. If you keep in touch with all these people, you're either superhuman or running for office.

To commemorate the fifth anniversary of National Unfriend Day, which Kimmel announced in 2010, may we suggest you free your feeds from these five types of "friends":

Third-grade classmates

Sure, it's sort of fun to get a friend request from someone you bunked with at summer camp or chased around the playground at recess. You look at their photo, judge them on what they're up to now and conjure up a distant memory or two.

But then ... nothing. Unless you live in the same city and have lots in common -- "Wow, I love Renaissance fairs too!" -- chances are your rekindled "friendship" will never go anywhere. Put it out of its misery.

Oversharers

"Waffles for breakfast!" "I'm so sick of my morning commute." "Here's the 11th slide show this week of my kid. So cute!" Some people share so much that their posts become social white noise, like radio commercials.

Worse, their posts take over our feeds like kudzu and crowd out news from friends you actually want to hear from. Lose 'em.

HLN: What types of posts make you unfriend people?

That friend of Ricardo's you met two years ago at that party

You talked about football, or "Mad Men," or something. He seemed fun. "Hey friend me and I'll friend you back!"

Have you spoken since? No.

Exes

Unless you truly have become pals, why are you friends with your ex on social media?

To alleviate guilt? To show how grown-up you are? To access their profile and think catty thoughts (ooh, he's gained weight)?

Bad reasons, all. Stop.

Those irritatingly fabulous couples

Yes, we all tend to post stuff that makes us look good. But then there are friends whose Facebook personas are like something out of an infomercial.

Look at their fabulous lifestyle! Their Architectural Digest home, their honor-roll children, their impressive 10K results, their amazing meal at that hot new restaurant, their vacations to Bali and Tuscany.

No bad news, ever. And every picture of them looks practically Photoshopped.

Kimmel has a message for these people.

"You tag people you claim to love in unflattering photos where they look terrible," he says. "But you know who doesn't look terrible in those photos? You. Never you.

"Too many photos of your food, your body, your vacation, your feet, your feet on vacation," he adds. "You've been warned. You won't hear from me again -- until your birthday."

Driver found hanged inside bus

  • Relatives of bus driver found hanged in bus reject police finding of suicide

  • Yousuf al-Ramouni's brother says he saw bruises and blood on the body

  • "This is not the work of one individual but several individuals," he says

(CNN) -- The death of an Arab bus driver discovered hanged in his bus near Jerusalem is generating controversy among Palestinians who reject the police finding of suicide.

Yousuf al-Ramouni of Jerusalem was found dead Sunday. Police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said Monday on Twitter that findings of the autopsy indicate his death was "not criminal related whatsoever."

But the driver's brother, Oussama al-Ramouni, described seeing bruises and "signs of blood" on his brother's back.

"This is not the work of one individual but several individuals," he told CNN.

Yousuf al-Ramouni died the same day an Israeli was stabbed with a screwdriver near central Jerusalem, the latest in a string of stabbing attacks targeting Israelis.

The stabbing victim was taken to the hospital in moderate condition, Rosenfeld said Sunday.

Video said to show MH17 crash

  • A video that emerged over the weekend purportedly shows the crash's aftermath

  • Dutch investigators have begun the removal of wreckage from the site

  • Ukraine's President tells German newspaper country is ready for 'scenario of total war'

  • The passenger jet carrying 298 people was shot down in July over eastern Ukraine

(CNN) -- As the huge plume of black smoke fills the sky, people react with shock and confusion.

Some run to try to tackle small blazes, others stand and stare.

Captured on what appears to be a cellphone video, the scene is believed to be the immediate aftermath of the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in eastern Ukraine four months ago.

MH17 was shot down in July 2014

MH17 wreckage recovery begins

Report details final moments of MH17

The footage emerged online over the weekend, just as the removal of wreckage from the crash site for an international investigation finally began.

The video was posted on YouTube by the Russian newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda, which said it depicts the moments after the passenger jet came down.

It shows fire raging in field with bits of wreckage strewn nearby.

Tongue-lashing for Putin at G20

Flight 17 was shot down on July 17 with 298 people on board over territory controlled by pro-Russian separatists. The dispute over who is responsible for the disaster continues to taint relations between Moscow and the West.

The United States and other Western nations have accused the pro-Russian separatists of shooting down the plane with a Russian surface-to-air missile. But Moscow and the rebels have claimed Ukrainian forces were responsible.

The continuing disagreement, as well as Russia's broader interference in Ukraine, prompted bouts of strong criticism of Russian President Vladimir Putin by Western leaders at the G20 summit in Australia over the weekend.

Putin left the event earlier than his fellow world leaders Sunday, saying he had to rest before a busy Monday. But he described the discussions at the summit as "constructive."

He also expressed the view that the Ukraine crisis "has good chances for resolution."

Ukraine prepared for 'total war'

His comments contrast with the words coming from the Ukrainian government in Kiev, amid reports that Russian troops and weapons are moving into eastern Ukraine.

"We are prepared for a scenario of total war," Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko reportedly told the German newspaper Bild. "We don't want war, we want peace and we are fighting for European values. But Russia does not respect any agreement."

Moscow has repeatedly denied accusations from Kiev and Western governments that it has sent forces into eastern Ukraine to bolster the rebels.

A ceasefire agreement reached in September between the Ukrainian government and the separatists no longer appears to have any connection with the reality on the ground.

Exchanges of mortar fire are common in eastern Ukraine.

Residents in the shattered town of Debaltseve told CNN's Phil Black that artillery fired by both sides falls there almost every day, often destroying homes.

Removal of MH17 wreckage

Amid the chaotic conflict, Dutch investigators have been trying to recover the wreckage from MH17.

Everyone aboard the flight was killed. Around two-thirds of the victims were from the Netherlands.

The vast crash site was left unsecured, and international investigators struggled to reach the area as fighting raged.

The removal of the wreckage began Sunday and continued Monday, the Dutch Safety Board said. It is expected to take several days.

The wreckage will be transported by train to the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv before being flown to the Netherlands.

The investigators say they intend to reconstruct a section of the aircraft to help determine what happened.

Further investigation needed

In its preliminary report in September on the disaster, the Dutch agency said Flight 17 broke apart in the air after it was hit by a burst of "high-energy objects" from outside.

That report set out a list of areas that still need further investigation, including forensic examination of wreckage and any foreign objects found. It noted at the time that Dutch investigators still hadn't been able to visit the site amid the unstable situation in eastern Ukraine.

In the aftermath of the crash, the rebels were widely accused of looting the site, tampering with the evidence and stopping investigators from combing through the wreckage.

After an initial delay, most of the bodies of the victims have been removed from the area and transported out of Ukraine.

But as recently as September, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said it was likely that there were still remains strewn across the fields. Australia had 38 of its citizens and residents on the plane.

Bono needs surgery after a fall

  • U2's website says Bono was injured and needs surgery

  • The singer had "a cycling spill in Central Park," the website says

  • The band calls off its scheduled appearances on The Tonight Show

(CNN) -- U2 front man Bono injured his arm in a Central Park cycling accident and now needs surgery, a statement on the band's official website said Sunday.

Have you seen Bono's luggage?

The statement said the band is calling off its scheduled appearances this week on NBC's "The Tonight Show."

"It looks like we will have to do our Tonight Show residency another time - we're one man down," the statement said. "Bono has injured his arm in a cycling spill in Central Park and requires some surgery to repair it."

Reps for the band could not be immediately reached for comment.

"We're sure he'll make a full recovery soon, so we'll be back!" the statement said. "Much thanks to Jimmy Fallon and everyone at the show for their understanding."

News of the fall comes just days after the rear hatch flew off an aircraft taking the singer from Dublin to Berlin.

Cops: Men tried to ship baby parts

  • The packages included an infant's head, a sliced foot and an adult heart

  • Thai police: Two Americans said they wanted to surprise their friends back home

  • Officials: The body parts were stolen from a hospital; video shows the two Americans

Bangkok, Thailand (CNN) -- Two Americans stole adult and infant body parts from a museum inside a Bangkok hospital and tried to ship them to Las Vegas, Thai police say.

The two men, identified as Ryan Edward McPherson and Daniel Jamon Tanner, told police they wanted to surprise their friends back home, Royal Thai Police Deputy Commissioner Gen. Ruangsak Jritake said.

Thai crackdown on infant corpse statues

Thailand's peace comes with a price

It was not immediately clear whether McPherson or Tanner had attorneys.

A delivery company intervened in the shipment. On Saturday, a DHL office in Thailand's Pathum Thani province called police after workers there were scanning shipments and discovered the body parts inside three packages.

The packages contained five acrylic plastic boxes, Jritake said.

One box contained an infant's head; another contained a baby's left foot, which was sliced into three pieces, the police official said. The other acrylic boxes contained an adult heart and adult skin.

"We have talked with an American who was trying to send the parcels to the USA, but we could not press any charges on him and we are not quite sure which laws we can apply to him." Bang Pongpang police chief Col. Adisorn Semsawat said over the weekend.

At the time, police said the American told them he found the infant body parts at a night flea market and that he had paid about $100 for them -- though he could not remember where the market was located.

But on Monday, authorities revealed more details on the case.

All the body parts were stolen from the Siriraj Medical Museum within Siriraj Hospital, the largest hospital in Thailand, Jritake said. The body parts were taken from the forensic medicine museum and anatomical museum.

Police said closed-circuit video from the hospital showed two men identified as McPherson and Tanner.

Royal Thai Police are seeking an arrest warrant for the two men and plan to charge them with theft from a government hospital.

But the two men have already left Thailand for Cambodia. If an arrest warrant is approved, Thai officials may have to seek the two men's extradition.

Thai police say they've been in touch with the U.S. Embassy.

The U.S. embassies in Bangkok and in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, did not immediately respond to CNN's requests for comment.

Not the first time

The bizarre discovery is not the first time infant remains have been found in Thailand. In 2010, more than 2,000 illegally aborted fetuses were recovered at a Buddhist temple in Bangkok.

Infant body parts can be bought on the Thai black market. Some Thais practice black magic and believe that supernatural power comes from infant body parts, if the rites are performed by monks or sorcerers. They believe that having the items provides protection and business success and can ward off bad luck.

Police say in 2010, the smell of decay led investigators to the Phai-nguern Chotinaram temple in central Bangkok, where they discovered more than 2,000 illegally aborted fetuses. Three people were arrested, including two morticians who were charged with hiding bodies.

According to the hospital museum website, for 120 years "Siriraj Hospital has collectively gathered an enormous compilation of medical equipments and tools, anatomical and clinical specimens including important artifacts and archives relating to the history of medicine in Thailand."

170 sickened on cruise ship

  • 158 passengers and 14 crew members come down with norovirus

  • Princess Cruises' Crown Princess was on a nearly-month long trip

(CNN) -- The latest norovirus outbreak aboard the Princess Cruises' Crown Princess has infected 172 people, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

At least 158 of 3,009 passengers and 14 of 1,160 crew members came down with the virus aboard the Crown Princess during a 28-day cruise that docked in Los Angeles on Sunday.

This ship had sailed from Los Angeles to Hawaii and Tahiti.

Onboard rapid norovirus testing resulted in positive results of the virus, the CDC investigation update confirmed.

"Over the last few days, the ship began seeing an increased number of gastrointestinal illnesses, caused by norovirus (commonly referred to as the stomach flu)," said Princess Cruises spokeswoman Susan Lomax, via email. "In response, we have enacted our stringent disinfecting protocols developed in conjunction with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), which includes an extensive deep cleaning of the ship and the terminal in Los Angeles on Sunday before the ship embarks on its next voyage."

The CDC statement confirmed the ship has implemented CDC sanitation procedures to slow the disease's spread. The cruise line also made announcements to notify onboard passengers of the outbreak, encouraging hand hygiene and case reporting. Passengers about to board the ship were also supposed to be notified.

At least 122 of 3,161 passengers and 30 of 1,176 crew members aboard the Crown Princess were sickened on an April sailing, according to the CDC. The federal agency blamed norovirus and E. Coli for the outbreak.

Norovirus is known for being quite contagious. It causes nausea, vomiting and diarrhea and is believed to have infected passengers on a number of cruise ships this year.

"As it is the cold and flu season, when the stomach flu circulates on land, we encourage all of our guests to be diligent in following the widely accepted practices of frequent hand washing with soap and water and the use of hand sanitizers," said Lomax.

Is your cruise safe?

In February, 114 passengers and 10 crew members took ill on the Holland America cruise ship MS Veendam during a weeklong voyage.

In January, more than 600 people on cruise ships sailing in the Caribbean fell ill from the virus, the CDC reported.

How the Navy avoids norovirus

Norovirus infects many people on land, but health officials track it on cruise ships, leading to more frequent reporting of cases, the CDC said.

It is passed in person-to-person contact and can spread more easily in closed quarters.
