Most Wanted list female fugitive caught

  • She was on the run for five years

  • The woman was taken into custody at an Oregon shopping mall

  • She and her husband are accused of abusing their adopted children

(CNN) -- For five years, they pursued her, always one step behind as she used aliases and altered her appearance to elude them.

But Janet Killough Barreto's luck ran out at a shopping mall in Portland, Oregon, where the U.S. Marshals Service caught up with her -- the lone female fugitive in their 15 Most Wanted list.

"The crimes they are alleged to have committed are nothing short of horrendous and despicable," Union County, Mississippi, Sheriff Jimmy Edwards said, about Barreto and her husband. His department aided in the search because her alleged crimes took place in his jurisdiction.

"Now it is time to let justice be served."

Abuse leads to death

Barreto, 43, and her husband, Ramon, allegedly traveled to Guatemala on multiple occasions in 2005 and 2006 to purchase children from a local adoption agency. Authorities say the children were brought back to the United States and were malnourished, physically abused, and forced to sleep on beds with plywood bottoms.

"The children were purportedly often punished with beatings and on various occasions duct-taped to their beds, punched in the stomach, and forced to endure having their heads submerged under water," the Marshals Service said.

In 2008, the abuse allegedly led to the death one of their adopted children, a 2-year-old girl.

Barreto was arrested in May of that year for child abuse, neglect, and manslaughter. She was released six months later on bond.

On the run

In March 2009, Barreto was arrested again for tampering with a witness and later released on bond. Two months later, she never appeared in court to face the charges against her, authorities said.

The Union County Sheriff's Office began searching, aided by the U.S. Marshals when Barreto was added to their "15 Most Wanted" list in June 2013. Authorities asked the public for any information leading to Barreto, offering a $25,000 reward.

A "Wanted" poster distributed by the Marshals Service said Barreto was known to change her appearance using wigs. It also said Barreto would evade law enforcement through the use of several aliases, fleeing before her true identity was discovered.

Cornered

The call came in on Monday.

According to authorities, the five-year investigation gained considerable momentum when a "concerned citizen" called the U.S. Marshals task force in Oxford, Mississippi, with information that placed Barreto in either Oregon or Washington. The caller also told authorities that the Barretos might have a small child with them.

The investigation moved swiftly.

Less than 24 hours after that initial tip, a lead about a possible location sent agents to Oregon.

They cornered Barreto and her husband late Tuesday afternoon at the Jantzen Beach Center, a shopping mall in Portland.

At first, the Barretos refused to identify themselves, but the husband was identified on the spot when his fingerprints were verified digitally.

Though Barreto continued to be uncooperative, her identity was revealed once she was fingerprinted at a local jail.

"Janet Barreto is a malicious individual. Through her alleged crimes, Barreto demonstrated a blatant disregard and lack of respect for life other than her own," said U.S. Marshals Service Director Stacia Hylton.

The infant found with the Barretos during their arrest was placed with child protective services, authorities said.

Six years after the death of their daughter, it's uncertain what the Barretos will face upon their return.

Both are currently being held at the Multnomah County Detention Center in Portland, awaiting extradition to Mississippi, authorities said.

It is unknown whether either has retained an attorney.

  • Top seed Novak Djokovic loses to Tommy Robredo in Cincinnati

  • Second straight third round defeat for Djokovic in Masters 1000 events

(CNN) -- Novak Djokovic will go into the U.S. Open without the match practice he was seeking after suffering his second straight third round defeat in a Masters 1000 tournament.

The world number one exited at this stage in Cincinnati Thursday to Spain's Tommy Robredo, beaten in straight sets, 7-6 7-5.

Fresh off his honeymoon and with his first child due, Djokovic went out to eventual winner Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Toronto last week.

Tennis legends' surprising comebacks

He had hoped to improve in this week's tournament, particularly as it's the only one of nine Masters 1000 events to elude him.

Djokovic has been a four-time runner up on the hard courts in Ohio and lost to John Isner in the quarterfinals last year.

This time around he did not even get to that stage, losing control of his match against Robredo after losing a tight first set tiebreak 8-6.

Djokovic had actually retrieved an early break to level at 4-4 but could not take full advantage. A single break of service in the second set was enough for Robredo to close out a memorable win.

"Just many, many, many things are not clicking these two weeks on hard courts," Djokovic told the official ATP Tour website.

"It's unfortunate, but it's more than obvious I'm not playing even close to what I'm supposed to play. I have to keep on working and trying to get better for U.S.Open," added the Serbian.

Earlier, Isner had two match points against former Wimbledon and U.S. Open champion Andy Murray before the Briton emerged the winner in three sets.

Murray, who has slipped to eighth in the world rankings after having back surgery in 2013, eventually prevailed 6-7 6-4 7-6.

America giant Isner had the match points on Murray's service as he trailed 5-6 in the deciding set, but could not capitalize on his opportunities.

Murray took control of the subsequent tiebreaker and won it for the loss of just two points to go into the last eight.

"I played very well," Murray told Sky Sports. "This is a big win for me as he (Isner) plays extremely well here."

In the women's tournament at the same venue, world number one Serena Williams maintained her hopes of a first Cincinnati title with a straight sets win over Italy's Flavia Pennetta 6-2 6-2 to reach the quarterfinals.

"I got an early break and just didn't let go," Williams told the official WTA Tour website.

She will face Serbia's Jelena Jankovic for a place in the semifinals after the eighth seed later beat Sloane Stephens of America 7-6 6-4.

Stewart out of NASCAR race

  • Tony Stewart fatally struck dirt-track driver Kevin Ward Jr. last weekend

  • Authorities are investigating, but no charges have been filed in the case

  • Race team: Stewart won't be in the next Sprint Cup race, but he may return

  • The announcement comes the same day as Ward's funeral in New York state

(CNN) -- The same day the man he fatally struck was laid to rest, NASCAR driver Tony Stewart's team announced that he won't be racing this weekend -- though it didn't rule a return to the track soon thereafter.

In a brief statement, Stewart-Haas Racing said Thursday that Stewart "has decided not to compete" in Sunday's race in NASCAR's top division, the Sprint Cup Series.

Jeff Burton will take his place in the No. 14 car in the Pure Michigan 400 at Michigan International Speedway.

"The driver change pertains only to Michigan," the Stewart-Haas Racing team said. "Stewart's plans for upcoming Sprint Cup races have yet to be determined."

Stewart's future outside the track is also in question, as authorities investigate the death of fellow driver Kevin Ward Jr. at an August 9 Empire Super Sprints series dirt-track race in upstate New York.

Tony Stewart known as a 'hot head'?

Will Stewart face criminal charges?

Video from the Canandaigua Motorsports Park race shows two cars coming out of a turn, with Stewart's No. 14 car sliding up the track toward Ward's No. 13 car. The two cars get close and appear to make contact before Ward's car hits the wall and spins out.

Ward gets out of his crashed car and walks determinedly on the track toward the race cars, which had slowed for a yellow flag. Ward points a finger and appears to be yelling. One car swerves to avoid Ward on the half-mile dirt track.

Stewart's car passes close to Ward, and it appears that its right rear tire hits him.

Authorities announced two days later that 20-year-old Ward, a New York sprint car driver, had died of "massive blunt trauma."

Tony Stewart did not drive Sunday in a NASCAR Sprint Cup race at Watkins Glen International race track.

Ontario County Sheriff Philip C. Povero said that there was no evidence at that point that a crime was committed, adding that the investigation was progressing well.

Some have speculated that Stewart -- who was interviewed after the incident -- could face charges.

Even if authorities don't press charges, one person not convinced of Stewart's innocence is Ward's father.

According to a story on Syracuse.com, Kevin Ward Sr. said that other drivers saw his son walking on the track.

"Apparently, Tony Stewart was the only one driving out there who didn't see him," the father said, according to the report.

In the same story, Kevin Ward Sr. asked the world to remember his son as a talented driver who seemingly "slept with a smile on his face."

Hundreds joined the Ward family to remember him Thursday at his funeral at South Lewis Central School.

The mourners passed a row of bouquets to get into the school, some wiping away tears as they did.

Afterward, people gathered outside to release balloons that were orange and white, Ward's racing colors. They then gave theracer one last round of applause, not because of his racing exploits but because of the young man he was.

As family friend Ray Falk recalled to CNN affiliate WSYR, "If you weren't laughing, he'd make you laugh."
