Rare pale-headed croc kills man

  • The 4.5 meter crocodile, which was subsequently shot, had a pale head and dark body

(CNN) -- A man has died after being attacked by a pale-headed saltwater crocodile nicknamed "Michael Jackson" in Australia's Northern Territory.

The 57-year-old man was fishing with his wife on the bank of the Adelaide River Monday when his line apparently became snagged, Northern Territory Police said.

"It appears he has entered the water and tragically was taken by a crocodile while retrieving fishing equipment," they said in a statement on Facebook.

Parks and Wildlife Rangers and members of the Water Police Section subsequently shot and killed the 4.5 meter (14.7 foot) crocodile, they said. The man's body was found nearby.

The incident is believed to have occurred about 5.30 p.m. local time Monday (4 a.m ET, 8 a.m. GMT), police said.

Peter Saltmarsh, from Spectacular Jumping Crocodile Cruise, told CNN it was the first time in his 20 years working as a guide on the river that such an incident had occurred.

He was an old, beaten up, battle-scarred crocodile that everyone knew.

Adam Britton

"There are plenty of crocodiles up here and we don't have many problems as a rule. There are lots of signs, there are lots of cruises, there are lots of warnings and there's lots of knowledge," he said.

Five companies operate crocodile cruises in the area with the giant reptiles distributed about one every 100 meters along the river, on the banks of which they could sometimes be spotted, Saltmarsh said.

"They normally eat fish and kangaroos and other things -- they're not after us. They're very timid and elusive animals, they're very lazy and very rarely seen." He said crocodiles could stay underwater for up to four hours.

"Michael Jackson" was recognizable for its pale head and had been known to locals for about 10 years, Saltmarsh said.

The late pop singer Michael Jackson had suffered from the skin condition vitiligo, which caused parts of his skin to lighten.

Saltmarsh said it was unfortunate that the victim had apparently entered water inhabited by big crocodiles at dusk to retrieve his lure.

"The crocodile could have thought he was any sort of an animal. It's just really, really unfortunate. This person's made a tragic error of judgment."

Recognizable crocodile

Dr. Adam Britton has been researching crocodiles in the Northern Territory for about 18 years and was familiar with "Michael Jackson."

"What made that particular animal special was that it had a very light colored head, so it was very recognizable," he said. "It was missing part of its tail, two limbs and had a big scar on its belly.

"He was an old, beaten up, battle-scarred crocodile that everyone knew," Britton said.

"When this report of someone being killed came in, people knew he was pretty much the only crocodile that lived in that territory," he said. "A lot of people didn't want to see him shot."

But Britton said that it was a legal requirement that the crocodile be killed so that the coroner could confirm the cause of death by, for example, matching bite marks and examining the reptile's stomach contents.

Evidence also suggested that if a crocodile successfully took a human it would be more likely to do so again in the future, he said. "Crocodiles learn patterns and routines and we know from their wild behavior that they'll actually come back to the same spot to catch a prey animal."

Britton said that he had heard of other people previously fishing from the same area where the man was taken. It had better access than most of the Adelaide River, which is mainly edged by muddy mangroves, he said.

The fact that others may have fished there without incident could have created a mistaken sense of safety, Britton said.

"One of the things that makes crocodiles so dangerous is that you can do things like that and get away with it. Because crocodiles don't always attack," he said. "That leads people into a false sense of security about how risky it actually it is."

In the wrong place at the wrong time, tragedies like this could then happen, he said.

"Often crocodiles will hone in on people who are actually fishing," Britton said. "There have been examples of crocodiles sneaking up and stealing fish. Likely when [the victim] stepped in to get his lure back, it was right there under the water -- probably expecting a fish. As far as the crocodile was concerned that was potential food for it."

Worldwide attacks

"It's just a tragedy on every level, there are no positives that can possibly come out of this," Britton said, adding that someone shouldn't have to lose their life to drive the safety message home.

While "Michael Jackson" was not actually an Albino -- a genetic mutation -- it was rare to see crocodiles with its coloring, which likely resulted from temperature changes during its incubation, he said.

"It doesn't happen very often. But if you hatch out thousands of eggs you'll see a few examples every few years," he said.

Britton said Michael Jackson was probably 40 to 50 years-old, meaning he would have hatched at a time when the number of crocodiles in Australia was low.

Declining numbers led to their protection in Australia in 1971, but the population is now regarded as being almost fully recovered, he said.

The species was found throughout South East Asia, Britton said and a database -- Crocbite -- had been created to record confirmed attacks across the world going back to the 1800s.

Prior to Monday's fatal attack, the most recent suspected attack in the Northern Territory was on Melville Island, where Australian Broadcaster ABC reported that "biological remains" had been found inside a crocodile after a man had gone missing earlier this month.

When the National Guard comes

  • National Guard troops can be activated by governors or the president

  • Every state and Washington, D.C., have their own National Guard

  • Guard members have helped quell unrest in Los Angeles and New Orleans

  • They have also been mired in controversy, such as with the Kent State shootings

(CNN) -- They've served in wars in what is now the U.S. since 1637. When natural disasters strike, they're often among the first to head to the epicenter.

And now, National Guard members are trying to keep the peace in Ferguson, Missouri, as the city grapples with the shooting death of an unarmed teenager.

Ferguson police tactics under scrutiny

Gen. Honoré: Police should adjust tactics

Ferguson certainly isn't the first time the troops have been called up to quell civil unrest.

According to the U.S. Constitution, the militia can be deployed "to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions." And both the president and governors can call up the troops.

Here's a look at other times National Guard members have stepped in during civil turmoil:

WHAT: Hurricane Katrina

WHEN: 2005

WHY: In addition to assisting with rescues, National Guard members were called in to help support local law enforcement.

Lt. Gen. Russel Honoré, who led Task Force Katrina, said National Guard troops "were positioned on every block to establish a sense of safety and source of help for the people in need."

The storm that led to 1,833 deaths also spawned tumult, particularly in New Orleans.

Officers told CNN at the time they lacked manpower and steady communications to properly do their jobs. They said they needed help to prevent the spread of looting and violence that were prevalent in the city.

Honoré said about 50,000 National Guard members responded to Katrina. They "did not leave communities till people were safe and sound," he wrote.

WHAT: Los Angeles riots

WHEN: 1992

WHY: When four police officers were acquitted after the beating of Rodney King, a series of riots over five days left more than 50 people dead and a city wracked with racial tensions.

Like in Ferguson, the Los Angeles conflict started with the controversial treatment of a black man by white police. After King led officers on a high-speed chase, he was struck more than 50 times with police batons and suffered 11 fractures.

More than 9,800 California National Guard troops were dispatched to help restore order. Unlike with Ferguson, where Missouri National Guard troops were summoned by the governor, President George H.W. Bush called the Guard into federal service during the Los Angeles riots.

The LA riots marked the most recent time the National Guard was federalized, National Guard spokesman Jeremy Webster said.

WHAT: Kent State University rally

WHEN: 1970

WHY: About 100 Ohio National Guardsmen were called to Kent State in Ohio to disperse an angry crowd of students protesting the Vietnam War.

Guard members fired tear gas, and some students said they were surprised the guardsmen followed them as they ran away.

After several standoffs, 28 Ohio guardsmen fired into the crowd for 13 seconds, wounding nine students and killing four.

The shootings led to a national protest involving more than 4 million students.

WHAT: Little Rock high school desegregation

WHEN: 1957

WHY: In perhaps the most controversial state deployment of National Guard members, Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus called on troops to block nine black students from attending Little Rock Central High School.

"That's when I knew that they were just not going to let me go to school ... that they were not there to protect me, too, like the other students," recalled Elizabeth Eckford, one of the "Little Rock Nine." She was 15 at the time.

The nine black students were taunted and spat upon by a white mob when they attended school.

President Dwight Eisenhower eventually sent more than 1,010 federal troops to Little Rock to ensure compliance with court-ordered integration.

WHAT: Whiskey Rebellion

WHEN: 1794

WHY: A popular uprising broke out against a federal excise tax on liquor and the stills that produced it.

After Pennsylvania's governor said he didn't have enough militia to enforce compliance, Secretary of War Henry Knox called for more than 12,000 troops from Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

But it took two months to get the troops to western Pennsylvania. By the time they reached Pittsburgh, the uprising had been pacified.

4.2 magnitude quake in Oklahoma

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck central Oklahoma early Tuesday, the USGS said.

  • NEW: Damage from the quake, which hit near Guthrie, is unlikely, a seismologist says

  • Earthquakes have become common in Oklahoma

  • On Sunday, nine quakes were recorded

(CNN) -- A 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck near Guthrie, Oklahoma, at 7:41 a.m. CT (8:41 a.m. ET) Tuesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Some posted on social media about being awakened by the temblor.

"I just went surfing in bed," tweeted Shelley Leveridge.

Someone in a shop in Edmund posted: "That was definitely the biggest one felt here at the store. #earthquake shook every bottle on the shelf."

It's highly unlikely there was damage from the quake, said Austin Holland, a research seismologist with the Oklahoma Geological Survey.

Damage and injury are far more likely with quakes that register 4.0 and higher, the USGS reports.

But the temblor stands out from others that have happened in the state because many people appear to have felt it, Holland said. The USGS received more than 500 responses to the "Did you feel it?" section on its site, and the state survey received at least 200 reports from Oklahomans, he said.

In the past few years, earthquakes have become common in the state. In June, Oklahoma surpassed California in the number of temblors.

An increase began in 2009, when 20 quakes of 3.0 magnitude or higher occurred, followed by 43 the next year and increasing every year except for 2012.

Just last Sunday, nine earthquakes were recorded, including two that were 3.8 magnitude.

"When they first started happening they were a big deal," said Althea Peterson, a reporter with Tulsa World who has written about so many earthquakes, it's practically become a beat for her.

"People are starting to see foundational damage, cracking around door frames," she told CNN on Tuesday. In Tulsa, the quakes are felt, but barely, like a low rumble. "It's nothing I ever expected in Oklahoma," she said.

(CNN) -- When a man tells me to "trust him," my typical reaction is to run.

When he tells me this while trying to get me to jump off a Swiss mountain with only a paragliding sail to stop me from plummeting to earth, I should run even faster -- even if he does look like Keanu Reeves.

Instead, I ignore my irrational fear of heights and rational fear of men using bad cliches, take a running leap then gasp as the sheer terror subsides and I find myself soaring into the Alpine air.

Below me the Swiss countryside unfolds like a map, with stunning views of the peaks of Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, and the waters of Brienz and Thun lakes.

It turns out the worst part of my first-ever paragliding flight -- made in tandem with an instructor resembling the star of "The Matrix" -- was the apprehension beforehand.

It took me a while to build up the courage to even sign up for the flight, after but several hours of watching other people effortlessly winging their way over the glaciers from Beatenberg to Interlaken, I decided to do it.

Still nervous, I opted for the tamer version of the rides on offer.

There's even a ride that allows fliers to make a grand entrance at a mountaintop restaurant, but with my aeronautic jitters, I could see this ending in disaster.

Once aloft and floating serenely, I apparently can do no wrong, according to my instructor.

All I need to do is sit tight, he says, which is just as well considering I feel like a stuffed penguin thanks to the layers of padding I'm wearing.

I get a chance to catch my breath and take in the staggeringly huge panoramic vista, which is great as long as I don't look down too often.

During the flight, my instructor takes pictures with a wide angle camera attached to an extendable pole, all of which turn out the same thanks to the tortured smile plastered on my face.

He explains that the trick to staying for long periods is to find rising air currents known as thermals and circle around in them to gain height.

Early mornings, he says, are best as the weather is more predictable.

After that little tutorial, he offers to show off some nifty tricks.

We're in midair, dangling from a scrap of crescent-shaped nylon fabric. What could possibly go wrong?

We do a quick, sharp dip to the left, followed by another to the right.

Hit the ground running

Before my dislodged heart can creep back to its original lodgings, we do a 360-degree turn.

The pirouette is fantastic except that even when we stop spinning, my world doesn't.

This isn't an experience for the faint of heart or full of stomach, but we survive to glide peacefully over alpine pastures, tiny chocolate box houses, lakes and grazing sheep.

To land, we have to stand up in the harness and be prepared to hit the ground running, a fact that gets me panicking all over again.

"You can do it," deadpans Keanu. The worst that can happen, he says, is I'll graze a knee or break a leg.

We manage, though I spoil the effect somewhat by crumpling into a heap and doing an excellent imitation of a beached whale.

This isn't enough to dampen my spirits though, especially since I'm now the proud owner of a certificate proving my pluck.

The spectacular flight over Switzerland will always be a good reminder that one can overcome fear with willpower.

Within reason, of course, I'm not about to jump off anything attached to a flimsy parachute just yet.

Not even for anyone who looks like Keanu Reeves.

How to get in the air

There are several paragliding options involving scenic train rides, gondola rides and thematic flights.

With or without a Keanu look-a-like instructor, it\'s still a stunning view.
