Grief and the Grammys

By now you probably already know that Justin Bieber was arrested -- and with the Grammys just around the corner. CNN wanted to examine the history of celebrity tragedy and troubles around Grammy time.

The death of singer Whitney Houston, seen here with producer Clive Davis at the 2011 pre-Grammy Gala and Salute To Industry Icons in Beverly Hills, California, on the weekend of the show in 2011, left show producers scrambling to put together a quick tribute. Grammys host LL Cool J offered some words of tribute and singer Jennifer Hudson sang Hudson's hit "I Will Always Love You."

Houston is not the only singer to pass away so tragically right around the Grammys. Karen Carpenter, who with her brother Richard performed as the Grammy-winning pop duo The Carpenters, died on February 4, 1983. The cause of death was heart failure related to her battle with anorexia. She was 32.

Both Chris Brown and his then-girlfriend Rihanna were scheduled to perform at the Grammys in 2009 when he was arrested that weekend for for assaulting her. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to probation and community service. Here they attend the Grammys in 2013 after they briefly reunited.

Amy Winehouse had to perform via satellite at the Grammys in 2008 after initially being denied a visa to travel to the U.S. because of issues related to drug abuse. The decision was ultimately reversed, but not in enough time for her to make the show. Cameras caught her stunned reaction during the show when she learned her single "Rehab" had won record of the year.

Stevie Wonder, seen performing here in 2004, was arrested during an anti-apartheid protest at the South African Embassy in Washington, a few days before the Grammys in 1985.

A few days before appearing in court to accept a plea deal on a drug charge, singer Bruno Mars performed at the 2011 Grammy Awards and won a Grammy for best male pop vocal performance.

In 2003, singer R. Kelly was arrested in Miami on child pornography charges a few weeks before the awards show. He had already been indicted on similar charges in Chicago stemming from a an alleged sex tape with a minor. The Florida charges were eventually dismissed and Kelly was acquitted of the Chicago charges.
