TWENTY-three 'shanty town' buildings in Son Banya, Mallorca, are to be demolished with work starting in July 2014.
The local Social Services councillor said estimated costs will be around €300,000. The action springs from a unanimous decision for a demolition programme which has been delayed since 2012. There were a total of 44 demolition orders given, but each case was appealed against, which stalled demolition efforts.
According to the councillor, the Patronat Alberg Son Riera, the public body responsible for the area, has received favourable results in 38 of the 44 cases which affect 54 buildings and 45 families. All families will eventually need to move, but officials are trying to ensure that all of them have alternative housing.
