Oops! Wardrobe malfunctions through the years
The date was February 1, 2004, and the place was Houston. That night, the New England Patriots ended up winning Super Bowl XXXVIII against the Carolina Panthers with a 32-29 victory. But we bet you don't remember all of those details. Thanks to Janet Jackson's historic "wardrobe malfunction" during her halftime performance with Justin Timberlake, the surprise appearance of her right breast became the defining moment of 2004's Super Bowl. This year marks the 10th anniversary of that pesky costume problem. To celebrate, we're taking a look at some of these other infamous clothing mishaps: 
In 2013, Mariah Carey showed "Good Morning America's" viewers more of her than they expected. The singer was in the middle of her live performance in Central Park when her floor-length Versace dress decided to call it quits. "Oh, s*** now the back of my dress just popped," Carey said, as she turned around to show the audience that the top half of her dress had split apart. As Carey's team rushed to try to put her back in the sparkling gown, the singer tried to make lemonade from her sartorial lemons. "Hey, I'll just hold (my breasts) up the whole time, what are you going to do?" 
If there is a lesson to be learned here, it is that sheer is rarely a kind fabric to anyone. Adrienne Bailon tried to go with "daring" and wore a sheer dress to a March 2012 event in New York City, but she ended up being simply overexposed. Those who didn't know much about the Cheetah Girl suddenly became very well acquainted. 
One of the telltale signs that Kanye West and Kim Kardashian were dating came in April 2012, when West seemed unable to keep his pants on while exiting a car with Kardashian. While most took this as all the proof they needed about the romance, Kardashian later explained that his pants problem wasn't as tawdry as it looked: "He was getting out of the car and ... his belt got pulled by this hook on the car door and he was trying to pull it up quick, and his belt was really heavy. It was a wardrobe malfunction, but it wasn't anything intentional." 
Perhaps Kim Kardashian could so easily brush off her fiance's wardrobe malfunction because she's suffered so many herself. Most recently, she had a clothing crisis before appearing on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" when a dress she'd had tailored just for her didn't fit, but one of her most infamous frock fractures came before a 2012 appearance on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" As she shared with her social media followers, her form-fitting leather dress couldn't quite keep up with her form. 
Sofia Vergara has an amazing sense of humor -- and body. We can say that with confidence after witnessing her reaction to her dress malfunction at the 2012 Emmys. Not only did the "Modern Family" actress share a close-up photo of her dress splitting in the seat, but she captioned it with, "Yes!!!! This happend 20 min before we won!!!! Jajajajja. I luv my life!!!!" 
Granted, Justin Bieber likes to wear his pants pretty low, so it's not always easy to tell whether he's a victim of his pants falling off -- like they did during this performance in Singapore -- or if they're supposed to show that much of his rear. On the scale of "fashionable sagging" to "complete wardrobe malfunction," we're going to call this 2012 appearance on "Today" a case of trendy low-riding gone wrong. 
We think 2012 might've been the year stylists instituted a no underwear rule. Like another celebrity on this list, Anne Hathaway revealed London and France (but no underpants) when she arrived at the New York premiere of "Les Miserables" that year. Thanks to her free-spirited approach to undergarments that night, she wound up giving photographers an eyeful as she climbed out of a car. 
Sometimes a celebrity can't win for losing. Hayden Panettiere tried to avoid any wardrobe malfunctions when she attended a Golden Globes after party in 2011, but she ended up walking right into one instead. The blinding flash of a professional camera will reveal even the best-laid pasties. 
Khloe Kardashian is no stranger to the so-called "nip slip." The reality star (and sister to Kim) "had a little nipple action" during her first night as host of Fox's "The X Factor," when her sheer shirt gave away the room's temperature. Or maybe it has something to do with being on Fox: When Kardashian appeared on "Fox & Friends" with her other sister, Kourtney, in 2011, she had to apologize for showing up on the show in a sheer shirt with no bra. 
HLN's Nancy Grace has flat-out denied having a "wardrobe malfunction" during her tenure on "Dancing With the Stars," but producers seemed to differ. During her performance of a quickstep in September 2011, Grace appeared to inadvertently flash viewers at home, leading the show to quickly cut away to the audience. Grace, however, thought their reaction was overkill: "It was a little tiny movement," she later told People magazine. "It did not equate to a wardrobe malfunction. I would be mortified." 
In March of 2010, Katherine Heigl experienced a moment that most stars probably have nightmares about. As she arrived on stage to accept an award at that year's ShoWest, the strap of her dress broke and nearly left her exposed for everyone to see. "Access Hollywood's" Billy Bush jumped to her rescue and held her strap in place so she could finish her speech, and Heigl later thanked the TV personality "for his 'support.' " 
It's a good thing Emma Watson didn't go commando for the 2009 premiere of "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" in London. The star accidentally showed more than she wanted to when she adjusted her dress in front of photographers. "This was a small wardrobe malfunction," Watson later told David Letterman. "At least I was wearing underwear." 
We bet Brad Pitt now knows the importance of checking one's zipper before standing in front of a sea of cameras. At a 2009 event for his movie "Benjamin Button," Pitt was caught on the Parisian red carpet with his fly wide open. On the bright side, at least it was just the zipper that was down and not his pants. 
Lindsay Lohan has intentionally exposed her breasts on a number of occasions, but we don't think her appearance at a 2010 General Motors celebrity fashion show was one of them. ("Think" being the operative word here.) 
After her appearance at Sean "P. Diddy" Combs' 35th birthday party in 2004, Tara Reid has become the granddaddy -- grandmama? -- of the wardrobe malfunction. The actress was trying to work it for the cameras upon arrival, but ended up just working off the left strap of her dress, leaving her breast out there for all to capture.
