Nineteen arrested in Algeciras in assault on Guardia Civil

Guardia Civil officers have arrested 19 individuals as suspects in an attack in which six Guardia Civil officers were injured.

The incident began with a boat chase where two officers were injured and it ended on land with suspects throwing stones at the officers, injuring four more.

Guardia Civil’s Operations Services Centre initially received a phone call from Gibraltar Maritime Police saying they were in pursuit of two boats and that they were calling to give them the vessels’ coordinates since they were entering the Algeciras Bay.

During the chase, however, one of the suspect boats collided with the police patrol boat, causing injury to two police agents who were affected by the strong impact.

Meanwhile, land patrol vehicles were dispatched to the areas near the river where they then observed the other pursued boat pull into a home with a pier.

The passengers inside began throwing stones at these officers, injuring four of them.

Eventually the two 12-metre boats were seized and 19 people were taken into police custody.
