Beautiful blood moon eclipse witnessed

Parts of the world saw a rare and beautiful sight when the Earth’s shadow fell across the moon today (Tuesday), turning it a shade of orange.

The lunar eclipse was visible across parts of the USA, Australia, New Zealand and much of South America.

Many say that the blood moon signals the beginning of the end, being a sign that the end of the world is nigh.

The Bible states: "The Sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord comes." (Joel 2:31)

NASA revealed on Twitter that the phenomenon occurs two or three times per year when the sun, Earth and the full moon line up so that the moon passes through Earth’s shadow.

The blood moon precise colouring depends primarily on the amount of volcanic ash and other aerosols floating in the atmosphere.

Sky-watchers in most of Europe Africa, the Middle East and Asia missed out on the event as it happened after moonset.

The second blood moon of 2014 will occur on October 8, with the tetrad's remaining two expected on April 4 and September 28, 2015.

The so-called tetrad phenomenon will not happen again until 2032.
