Rumours that Putin is in town

It has been rumoured that Russian President Vladimir Putin has purchased property in the exclusive Zagaleta urbanization in Benahavis, near Marbella.

According to the Vanitatis section of Spanish online daily El Confidencial, Putin is building a 4,000m2 mansion on a 17,762m2 plot.

According to local Spanish daily newspaper La Opinion de Malaga, the figures at least are correct, and the real estate sector points to Putin being the new resident in the area, despite the property not being in his name.

Some say that he has visited the work, which has been going on for some years, incognito to inspect it, as well as following its progress with satellite images.

The area has views of Gibraltar and the mountains of Ronda, and according to Vanitatis, the retaining wall alone has cost more than €5.5 million.

They also suggest that the mansion has 10 bedrooms, a shooting gallery, a cinema, a mini-golf course, a spa, gym, two pools, and has already cost some €19 million.

Despite the rumours, the local mayor, Jose Antonio Mena, says they are no more than that, and that the owner is in fact a Russian magnate who owns a fleet of fishing vessels.
