Mijas is to enter into negotiations with Hacienda (Inland Revenue Service) to make a plan to pay the debt run up by the, now defunct, hippodrome.
The hippodrome owes €25,000 in back taxes to the social security as well as other unpaid bills.
The fact that horses no longer run at the Costa del Sol hippodrome does not mean that Mijas council is giving up on it.
The racecourse belongs principally to the council as part of its tourist resources – a small part of it belongs to Unicaja – and as such they are responsible for its debts.
According to Lourdes Burgos, deputy mayor of Mijas, they are nearly at an agreement which would allow them to pay the majority of the debts before new ones accrue.
Burgos was quick to underscore the fact that the majority of the debts were run up when the hippodrome was being managed by a private company, between 2004 and 2008, which did not pay even the council’s bills for water or rubbish collection.
