Atlanta (CNN) -- The 87-year-old Georgia woman found dead in a Georgia lake didn't succumb from drowning, but rather from "blunt impact injury to the head," a coroner said Saturday.
Shirley Dermond's body was found in Lake Oconee, south of Athens, on Friday, Putnam County Sheriff Howard Sills told reporters.
The grisly find came 10 days after the decapitated body of her husband, 88-year-old Russell Dermond, was discovered in the couple's garage after friends, who hadn't heard from the couple in days, went to their home.
Putnam County Coroner Gary McElhenney said Saturday that Shirley Dermond's body was placed in the water after her death.
"Her death is classified as a homicide," McElhenney said.
The coroner didn't offer more details, including what might have been used to kill her or whether she suffered any additional trauma.
