Shocking murder-suicide in Soller

THE people of Soller have been left stunned and shocked after a woman was strangled to death by her husband who then shot himself. The tragedy leaves two young girls aged eight and 10 without a mother or father.

Jaume Mayol Bergas, 47, murdered his wife Maria Rosa Martinez Deya, 45, then committed suicide by shooting himself in the head with a hunting rifle, according to police sources.

The gruesome murder suicide case took place in the home the married couple shared in Soller. It seems the murderer had just been released from a psychiatric hospital, to which he had been referred after a failed suicide attempt. He went home, tied up his wife, killed her and then took his own life.

The married couple was reportedly going through a serious marital crisis. The victim worked in the Deia and Fornalutx Councils and was well-liked by everyone. Their closest friends reported that the husband was very controlling and that he had threatened to commit suicide. They also said his jealousy had caused them a lot of problems.

According to the Guardia Civil, no complaints had been filed by the woman for domestic violence. Her acquaintances claim she had refused to make any complaints to the local police because she felt sorry for her husband.
