Teen dies at Benidorm Theme Park

An 18-year-old boy from Iceland has died after falling from a roller coaster at Terra Mitica theme park.

The shocking accident took place on the ‘Inferno’ ride. The roller coaster reaches speeds of 60 mph and turns 360 degrees. The boy fell from a height of 10 to 15 metres, allegedly due to a mechanical failure in the safety seat.

The teen was with his father, brother and a friend at the time. He was still alive when medics reached him but he died on the way to emergency. His injuries included multiple fractures and head wounds.

A British holidaymaker, Lynn Alexander from Glasgow, had been on the ride just five minutes before. She said, “It’s totally shocking. We actually had our back to the ride as we had just picked the girls up and were walking away, but then we heard these loud gasps.

“We turned around and saw a group of people shouting ‘drop, drop’ and pointing. Then it became apparent what had happened and everyone was in shock.

“The park got everyone off the ride but it seemed to take ages. Then we saw the teenager’s family and they were obviously distraught.

“What surprised me is that they didn't even close the park down. We are still in shock and can’t believe it. My daughter is so shaken up as she could have been in the same seat just five minutes earlier.”

Original reports were stating that the teen was British. However, the police statement this morning said, “He is from Iceland and not Britain as some reports have said.”

The theme park has been open since 2000 and has never had a fatal accident. The Inferno rollercoaster was first opened in 2007. The park is yet to make a public statement.

Benidorm’s mayor Navarro has sent his condolences to the family and said that the city would help in any way they could.
