Spanish Senator sparks controversy with homophobic comments

CEUTA Senator Luz Elena Sanin blamed national debt on subsidies offered to homosexuals and now faces calls to resign.

Senator Sanin (People’s Party) has become the target of severe criticism condemning her for her rather homophobic comments after she defended the controversial austerity measures taken by President Mariano Rajoy.

The measures were necessary to pay off the debt incurred by the policy followed by the previous Socialist government of subsidising both non-governmental organisations and homosexuals, she said.

Furthermore, Sanin said Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero’s administration forced Spain’s national debt to surpass €1trillion with his favours to the homosexual community.

Her questionable comments have sparked controversy and aroused sharp criticism not only from PSOE and Spanish LGBT groups, but also from members of the People’s Party, who have gone so far as to distance themselves from her.
