Man stands trial for 2006 accident

A MAN is to be tried by a jury for allegedly causing a car accident and fleeing the area without helping a motorcyclist who died on the scene.

If convicted, the man could serve a prison sentence of two years and be ordered to pay the deceased’s family almost €100,000 in compensation. The trial date has been set for November 24.

The fatal accident dates back to September 2006. According to the provisional conclusions drawn by the public prosecutor, the defendant was driving on a motorway between Canillas de Albaida and Torrox dangerously ignoring all basic driving rules. At some point and without warning, he illegally turned to the right and crashed into the victim’s motorbike.

As stated by the prosecution, the victim was hit on the side and fell to the floor. He suffered chest trauma and a traumatic brain injury, which resulted in heart failure and death. Rather than rendering aid to the victim and trying to ascertain the seriousness of the victim’s injuries, the defendant fled the scene, said the prosecution.
