Police, protesters battle in Pakistan

(CNN) -- Protesters demanding the resignation of the Pakistani Prime Minister engaged in running battles with police near government offices in the capital Monday.

The demonstrators were armed with sticks and threw rocks while riot police fought back with tear gas, according to footage of Islamabad's secretariat from CNN affiliate GEO News.

The protesters were pushing through the wind and rain closer to the area housing Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's official residence, while police appeared to be in retreat from barricades.
