Multimillionaire business

DRUG-TRAFFICKING in Spain is a €6 billion business.

As recently stated by Minister of the Interior Jorge Fernandez Diaz in a press conference, G6 countries and the United States will work together to beef up their ongoing war on the illegal drugs trade.

Established in 2003 with the purpose of dealing with immigration, terrorism and law and order issues, the G6 comprises six European Union member states: Poland, Spain, United Kingdom, France, Italy and Germany.

Minister Diaz talked to the media following an intensive meeting of G6 Ministers of the Interior in Barcelona to convey the results of the session.

According to some studies conducted by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime drug-trafficking is a €300 billion business worldwide, which gives an idea of how big of a threat illegal drugs trade really is, said Minister Diaz.

In Spain, drug-trafficking is a €6 billion business – €18 million a day.

Minister Diaz said that 40 per cent of the cocaine and 75 per cent of hashish seized in the European Union by law enforcement officials are confiscated in Spain.

One of the G6’s biggest concerns is the maritime cocaine smuggling to Europe from Andean countries.

In his opinion, the results of the G6 summit have made it clear that the fight against drug-trafficking is necessary in itself, since illegal drugs are harmful to society. Minister Diaz went on to say that money benefits from the illegal drugs trade fund organised crime, illegal immigration networks, money laundering operations, as well as arms, human and sex trafficking.
