Emmy nominations 2014 announced

(CNN) -- The 2014 Emmy nominations were announced on July 10, and the competition is going to be fierce.

The Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has made some changes to its categories, splitting the outstanding movie or miniseries category into two and increasing the number of nominees allowed in the outstanding comedy and outstanding drama categories to seven, among other tweaks.

But for this year's show, both the drama and comedy categories are boasting a total of six nominees, including some welcome competitors like "Game of Thrones" and "True Detective."

Here's a rundown of some of the biggest contests:

Outstanding drama: "Breaking Bad"; "Downton Abbey"; "Game of Thrones"; "House of Cards"; "Mad Men"; "True Detective"

Outstanding comedy: "The Big Bang Theory"; "Louie"; "Modern Family"; "Orange is the New Black"; "Silicon Valley"; "Veep"

Outstanding lead actor in a drama: Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad; Jeff Daniels, The Newsroom; Jon Hamm, Mad Men; Woody Harrelson, True Detective; Matthew McConaughey, True Detective; Kevin Spacey, House of Cards

Outstanding lead actress in a drama: Lizzy Caplan, Masters of Sex; Claire Danes, Homeland; Michelle Dockery, Downton Abbey; Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife; Kerry Washington, Scandal; Robin Wright, House of Cards

Outstanding lead actor in a comedy: Louis C.K., Louie; Don Cheadle, House of Lies; Ricky Gervais, Derek; Matt LeBlanc, Episodes; William H. Macy, Shameless; Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

Outstanding lead actress in a comedy: Lena Dunham, Girls; Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie; Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep; Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly; Amy Poehler, Parks & Recreation; Taylor Schilling, Orange is the New Black

Outstanding miniseries: American Horror Story: Coven; Bonnie & Clyde; Fargo; Luther; Treme; The White Queen

Outstanding TV movie: Killing Kennedy; Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight; The Normal Heart; Sherlock: His Last Vow; The Trip To Bountiful

The 2014 Emmy Awards will be hosted by "Late Night's" Seth Meyers, and will air live on NBC August 25 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
