Foreign flights sustain Almeria airport

Seven out of 10 flights from Almeria airport have a foreign destination.

During September 2014 the airport’s flights were predominantly to and from foreign destinations, 71 per cent. This is due to a good tourist season and an upward turn in the international market, according to AENA. Another factor has been the disappearance of Spanair and Air Europa. However, there was still a 5.5 per cent rise in domestic flights during September against the same month in 2013 with 24,388 passengers. 59,683 passengers flew abroad in the same month. During the first nine months of 2014 the number of passengers travelling through Almeria airport totalled 621,252, an increase of 7 per cent over the same period of 2013. The airport now has more passengers than Granada and Cordoba but fewer than Malaga, Seville and Cadiz.

The UK, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden were the most sought after destinations. Those markets and the addition of new routes including Poland and Ireland have fuelled the growth of international traffic, making up 71 per cent of the airport’s activity.
