DESPITE efforts to save it, a 15-metre pine in Alfaz del Pi had to be felled.
The tree had stood in the El Pla park for more than 40 years but the trunk was practically hollow and the top of the tree increasingly fragile.
“It was sick and extremely dangerous,” explained Alfaz’s municipal biologist Jose Manuel Perez. “It would have fallen sooner or later and it was impossible to find a better solution.”
The risk that the tree would fall to the ground increased as each day passed and was aggravated by its size, agreed Juan Carlos Casiano, the counciilor in charge of Alfaz’s Maintenance department.
The pine will be replaced with a non-invasive evergreen, probably a ficus or paulownia that needs little upkeep, Casiano said.
