Spain: Rise in one person households

More than 4.4 million people live alone in Spain which constitutes 24% of the 18,217,300 Spanish homes.

The average number of people living in a home was 2.58 last year and this year it has gone down to 2.53.

According to the National Institute of Statistics (INE) more women live alone than men and three out of 10 homes have only two people in them.

The regions with the most number of people per household are Ceuta and Melilla and those with the least are the Basque country and Castilla y Leon.

One in three people between the ages of 25 and 34 still live with their parents in the family home; this figure rises to one out of two when speaking of those between the ages of 25 and 29.

In a country that used to have many large families, this descent in their numbers is a matter of concern for the government.
