Director’s movie in line for Oscar

DANIEL MONZON returned to Mallorca, where he was born, to present his film El Niño which is taking Hollywood audiences by storm.

El Niño has been selected as one of three movies to represent Spain in the 87th edition of the Academy Awards for the Best Foreign Language Film category.

As you would expect, there were plenty of congratulations for a job well done, whilst others clamoured to have their photograph taken with the filmmaker of the moment.

Daniel Monzon enthused: “The truth is that I am very excited.

I can enter the Oscar race with a 33.3 per cent chance of winning and El Niño competes with two other interesting movies.” Monzon is “especially excited” to be on the red carpet in Hollywood.

“The Oscar party is fun,” added Monzon, “Hopefully we will go.” Action movie El Niño tells the story of Jesus, a small-time drug trafficker working in the Gibraltar Straits.

The film also stars British actor Ian McShane.

The movie has sliced through any Spanish competition this year in terms of revenue generated, scoring €2.9 million in its first weekend.
