NURSING assistant Teresa Romero has tested negative for Ebola.
She is believed to be the first person to have become infected with the virus via transmission outside of Africa. Her latest blood check came back negative, said family spokesperson Teresa Mesa. The result was later confirmed by a scientific committee. “She is very excited and in good spirits. She cannot wait to be released,” said Mesa.
She talked to the nursing assistant on Sunday October 19 after the test results came back. “Now we have to prepare her for what is out there. We have told her that her case has had a lot of impact on the media. I told her she is a heroine and that the whole country is following her case,” said Mesa. Teresa Romero has reportedly started eating solid foods.
A second blood test is to be performed in 48 hours to confirm the results of the first round of testing. Should it find no traces of the virus in her bloodstream, it could be said the nursing assistant has beaten the virus, said elpais.es.
However, she is not scheduled to be released from the hospital just yet. Doctors will keep her under observation for at least three more weeks to make sure the virus is not reproducing.
Teresa Romero was first admitted to La Paz-Carlos III Hospital in Madrid on October 6.
