Platinum albums? Not this year

The soundtrack for "Frozen," driven by such songs as "Let It Go" and "For the First Time in Forever," has sold 3 million copies, making it the top-performing album so far in 2014. It's no secret that "Frozen" has become a phenomenon -- here's a look at some of the other interesting numbers the project's racked up:

That's a heck of a return on the film's budget, which was $150 million. The story was based on the Hans Christian Andersen tale "The Snow Queen."

"Frozen" spent two weekends as the U.S. box office's No. 1 movie and 16 weeks in the top 10.

DVD and Blu-ray sales have been just as outstanding. The film has sold 7.6 million DVDs and another 6.5 million on Blu-ray.

The awards haven't just been financial. "Frozen" won two Oscars, including best animated feature. It was accepted by producer Peter Del Vecho and directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck.

Disney recently announced that there will be a new short called "Frozen Fever" coming in 2015. "Frozen" itself has already accumulated a box office tally of more than $1.27 billion -- including $873 million internationally.

"Let It Go" proved the runaway hit of the film. The song has been dubbed into 43 languages.

Five "Frozen" characters are joining the ABC series "Once Upon a Time," including Elsa, who's played by Georgina Haig.

Disney quickly added the Anna and Elsa characters to its theme parks. The wait to meet the two got to be as long as six hours at Epcot and almost as long at Disneyland.

Type " 'Let It Go' parodies" into Google, and the search engine will return 29,900,000 results. There aren't that many parodies -- fortunately -- but there are definitely hundreds, including "A Frozen Father" (above).

(CNN) -- It's not a great sign for the music industry when the year's top-selling album is the soundtrack to a Disney movie.

So far in 2014, there hasn't been a single album from a music artist that's sold a million copies or more, according to Billboard.

While "Frozen's" soundtrack has done just fine, with just over 3 million units sold as of October 10, it seems music fans haven't been as eager about albums released by artists.

In fact, the two performers who've come closest to reaching platinum-level success in 2014 actually released their albums last year. Beyonce's self-titled artistic smash has gone on to notch 776,000 units so far this year, while Lorde's "Pure Heroine" has pushed 754,000.

Even the "Frozen" soundtrack is a holdover, as it arrived last November.

As for 2014 releases, Eric Church is so far the biggest hit. The country star's "Outsiders," which arrived in February, has sold 722,000, closely followed by Coldplay's "Ghost Stories."

But perhaps not all hope is lost: 2014 still has some major players up ahead. Taylor Swift will release her latest album, "1989," on October 27, and the Foo Fighters' "Sonic Highways" is slated for November.

And if all else fails, maybe someone can convince Beyonce to drop another surprise album.
