Swift, Iggy Azalea up for top Grammys

Taylor Swift is known for confessional lyrics that slyly chronicle her romances with famous (and not so famous) men. But on occasion, Swift also speaks up when away from the mic. • Taylor Swift earns a Grammy nomination for record of the year

  • She'll compete against Iggy Azalea, Sia, Sam Smith, Meagan Trainor

  • Grammys are doling out nominations throughout the day

(CNN) -- The Grammys are taking their time releasing nominations Friday, but Taylor Swift can already celebrate a nod for one of the big categories: record of the year.

Swift's "Shake It Off" was one of five nominees for the award, one of Grammy's big three, along with song of the year and album of the year.

Other nominees in the category are "Fancy" by Iggy Azalea featuring Charli XCX, "Chandelier" by Sia, "Stay with Me" by Sam Smith and "All About That Bass" by Meagan Trainor.

It's one of Swift's two nominations Friday morning. She's also nominated for best pop solo performance.

Beyonce also picked up a nomination in the category of best urban contemporary album.

Other nominations have gone to Coldplay (best pop vocal album), Katy Perry (best pop vocal album) and Dierks Bentley (best country album).

The Grammys are trying something new this year. Instead of releasing all the nominations at once, the Recording Academy is putting them out in dribs and drabs: a handful on CBS' "This Morning" and most of the others on Twitter. The final category, album of the year, will be revealed on "A Very Grammy Christmas," a special airing tonight on CBS.

Naturally, the idea earned some criticism.

"This just seems ... odd for such a major show," wrote the Washington Post's Emily Yahr.

Nevertheless, the musicians have been appreciative.

"Grammy nom and my album multiply has sold 3 million worldwide as of this morning. Good start to the day, thanks for all the support and love," tweeted Ed Sheeran, who was nominated for best pop vocal album.
