Priest's comments controversy

A priest from a small village in Jaen has got himself in hot water after saying that men used to hit their wives, but they didn’t kill them because “they had morals”.

During mass, the priest of Canena said that “30 years ago, men got drunk, came home and hit their wives, but they didn’t kill them like they do today.”

He went on to say that the reason for this is that “before, people had morals, Christian values, and nowadays, they don’t.”

He also added that there are “more crimes, more violence, more drugs, more murders, more gender violence” despite the fact that “technically, nowadays we are more perfect, have more culture, more education, more social means…”

He continued to explain that people had a Christian upbringing, and although they might have got drunk, they stuck to the fifth commandment “thou shalt not kill”.

Now, he said, people don’t even know what the 10 commandments are and have no boundaries between good and evil, and that no matter how much they study, morals are not what they were.

He ended by saying that if Christ disappears from society, it will become “a jungle where the strong kill the weak and we have to kill to survive.”
