A brand-new 'View'

Political analyst Nicolle Wallace, left, and actress Rosie Perez are the newest faces to join ABC's "The View." They're signing on after the departures of co-hosts Sherri Shepherd, Jenny McCarthy and Barbara Walters. Here's a look at the ladies who've had a seat at "The View's" table:

Walters was the doyenne of the show, having started in 1997 and often serving as a leader of the passionate panel discussions. She retired in May 2014.

What is old is new again: It was announced in July 2014 that Rosie O'Donnell would be rejoining "The View." She previously co-hosted during the show's 10th season in 2006-07 and got into heated debate with former co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck.

Star Jones became somewhat infamous on "The View" after she reportedly announced she was leaving the show in 2006 without alerting her co-workers first. In 2012 she returned for an appearance that saw things get heated between her and Walters. Jones continues to appear on television, including in a stint on the reality show "The Celebrity Apprentice."

Debbie Matenopoulos started with the show, but never seemed to quite catch on with the audience. In 1999 she was abruptly replaced by Lisa Ling. In April 2014 Matenopoulos announced that she was married and pregnant.

Lisa Ling attended on "The View" from 2009 to 2012. She returned to international reporting and hosted "Our America with Lisa Ling" on the OWN network and "National Geographic Ultimate Explorer." In April 2014 it was announced that Ling would host a documentary series for CNN.

For awhile Joy Behar pulled double duty on both "The View" and as host of "The Joy Behar Show" on HLN. The later was canceled in 2011 and she left "The View" at the end of the 2013 season.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck was a lightning rod on "The View" because of her conservative beliefs, which often found her at odds with her fellow co-hosts. After a decade on the show it was announced that she would be leaving to join the talk show "Fox & Friends."

In 2007 Whoopi Goldberg became the show's new moderator. She mixed things up on the panel with her outspoken nature, including a heated debate with conservative pundit Ann Coulter and her defense of ESPN anchor Stephen A. Smith. She has continued to act, most recently in the 2014 reboot "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turles."

Sherri Shepherd joined the cast in 2007 following the departure of Star Jones. She stirred controversy when she expressed on air that she did not believe in evolution. She said goodbye to "The View" on August 11, 2014.

Jenny McCarthy, we hardly knew ye. The comedic actress joined the show for only one season -- announcing in 2014 that she was leaving along with Sherri Shepherd.

(CNN) -- It'll be a brand-new "View" in less than two weeks, with three new co-hosts in a new studio and with a new boss behind the scenes.

The long-running ABC talk show finalized its cast Wednesday, confirming that actress Rosie Perez and political analyst Nicolle Wallace will join Whoopi Goldberg and Rosie O'Donnell.

The four will start working together when new episodes of the show resume on September 15.

Goldberg is the only cast member from last season left standing -- well, mostly sitting -- at "The View." Barbara Walters' retirement from the show in May was the first in a series of changes, both on- and off-camera. In July, Sherri Shepherd and Jenny McCarthy stepped down from their co-host spots. And Walters' producing partner, Bill Geddie, was replaced by Bill Wolff, most recently an executive producer at MSNBC.

In a statement Wednesday night, Wolff described the four hosts as "powerful and accomplished women from different walks of life who have had amazing personal and professional experiences."

"Each brings incredible perspective and information to the table. This mix of smart, vibrant and energetic women is unlike anything else on daytime television."

"The View" faces challenges from a growing number of other daytime panel-style programs, including "The Talk" on CBS and the forthcoming syndicated show "The Real."

There had been speculation that ABC might decide to add a man to what has been an all-women show since its inception in 1997. Ultimately the network went with star power over testosterone.

Perez has starred in feature films such as "Do the Right Thing" and is about to co-star in the Broadway production "Fish in the Dark."

Wallace has a conservative political background, serving as a director of communications during the George W. Bush administration and a senior adviser to Sen. John McCain's 2008 campaign for president. She is a regular on MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

The casting of Perez and Wallace was first reported by Deadline.com on Wednesday. The website noted that ABC's "top-to-bottom makeover" of the talk show also entails a "new studio, new set (and) new logo."
