Luton airport evacuated after finding ‘suspect package’

LUTON AIRPORT was evacuated this afternoon at around 14.00 BST after a suspect package was found in security.

Bedfordshire police said the terminal had to be evacuated by all passengers and personnel while the package was being examined by specialist officers.

The airport, which is situated about 30 miles (40km) outside London has suspended all incoming flights and have advised any passenger travelling to or from Luton to check the status of the flights before arriving at the airport. The decision was expected to have an immediate effect on all flights.

All approach roads to the airport have also been closed until further investigation of the package is concluded.

It was unclear whether the package had been abandoned in the security area or found by staff during routine x-ray and bag searches.

A spokeswoman for the airport said: “London Luton Airport has evacuated the terminal building after a suspicious item was found in the security search area.

“The decision has been taken with the police to ensure the safety and security of passengers and staff.”

Army bomb disposal unit are at the scene (as at 1617hrs GMT)
