CNN's Damon honored at awards

• A newspaper editor from the Democratic Republic of Congo and a TV reporter from Serbia join CNN's Arwa Damon in receiving awards.


• There is also a special tribute to photojournalist Anja Niedringhaus who was killed in Afghanistan in April.

(CNN) -- CNN's senior international correspondent Arwa Damon is one of three journalists being honored at the Courage in Journalism Awards in New York.

Damon has been a frontline correspondent for CNN for a decade, often reporting from wars, fighting and flashpoints around the world.

The awards, organized by the International Women's Media Foundation, celebrate the courage of journalists who face incredible dangers in the course of their work.

Wednesday's event also promotes the importance of a free press and media around the world.

Also honored at the event, hosted by NBC News' Cynthia McFadden and Norah O'Donnell of CBS are newspaper editor Solange Lusiku Nsimire, who has withstood intimidation and attacks to her and her family in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Serbian TV reporter Brankica Stankovic, who is forced to live under police protection because of her investigative reporting.

There will also be a special exhibition of photographs from 2005 Courage Award winner and AP photojournalist Anja Niedringhaus, who was killed in Afghanistan in April.

Niedringhaus won a Pulitzer Prize in 2005 for her work in Iraq.
