We will remember them

THE Poppy Appeal 2014 has officially been launched.

Torrevieja was chosen this year to launch the appeal for Spain District North as the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums led the Standard Bearers from many Costa Blanca branches of the Legion along the Paseo Juan Aparicio to the waiting dignitaries including Torrevieja Mayor, Eduardo Dolon and the British vice-consul in Alicante, Lloyd Millen.

An Act of Remembrance was followed by the Last Post, a silence and Reveille before Chairman of District North, Nigel Hails spoke of how now begins the “superhuman effort” to raise funds during the commemorative year of the 100th anniversary of the start of the first World War. Last year €172,000 was raised to support armed forces personnel and their families and it is hoped more will be raised this year.

Eduardo Dolon thanked The Royal British Legion (RBL) for choosing Torrevieja to launch the Poppy Appeal said they were “honoured to be giving their support to the families and memories of soldiers past and present.” The Mayor was also presented with a certificate of special recognition for supporting the appeal launch as Lloyd Millen said the British Consul could not continue the work they do without the support of RBL.
