Eight detained in Thailand for British murders

TWO British suspects and six Burmese workers have been detained by police over the murders of the two British backpackers David Miller and Hannah Witheridge, who were murdered on a beach in Koh Tao on Monday.

The two British suspects were stopped at Suvarnabhumi International airport in Bangkok and ordered to return to the island for further questioning. One of the British men being questioned had blood stained clothing in his suitcase and a cut on his right hand.

It’s understood the Ware brothers, who were also from Jersey, shared a room with Mr. Miller, at the Ocean View Bungalows. Miss Witheridge was also staying in the complex but with other friends.

There is also strong evidence linking the six migrant workers to the deaths. Police Colonel Kissana, deputy for Thai police, said: “We have detained six Burmese suspects who were around the scene of the crime.

“We have strong evidence that led us to the Burmese suspects as blood stains were found on some of their clothes.”

DNA samples have been collected from the six men as one was found with a handgun and a pair of blood stained jeans. There is also footage showing an Asian looking man walking in the same area about 4am and then returning hastily 50 minutes later.

The devastated family have spoken for the first time of their grief, describing the speech therapy student as ‘a beautiful, intelligent, loving’ young woman who ‘poured joy into the lives of all who knew her.’ They said: “She was selfless and caring and made each and every day that little bit more wonderful. To lose her in the way that we have is beyond comprehension.

“We are heartbroken and no words can possibly describe how we feel.” Miss Witheridge was enjoying a holiday with friends before returning to complete a Masters Degree in speech and language therapy at the University of Essex.
