Beach campaign success

ENVIRONMENTAL awareness campaigns launched in Almuñecar have been declared a resounding success.

More than 2,500 people participated in the campaigns organised by Almuñecar Council on local beaches during the summer.

The project included the removal of more than 10,000 cigarette butts and the distribution of funnels so that beachgoers could dispose of cooking oil in designated containers instead of dumping it in the sea, said Environment and Beaches Councillor Luis Aragon.

In June, Almuñecar Council organised several sea-bed cleaning activities and a marine laboratory, in which more than 170 children and youngsters learned about sea life and the importance of the environment and of recycling waste.

Furthermore, the council launched four campaigns at Playa Puerta del Mar, La Herradura, San Cristobal and El Tesorillo, in which more than 600 participants were informed about the direct relationship between sustainability and marine fauna.
